Re: Minimal configuration
Your setup sounds about right. Do you have the shunt in that says "USB/EXT" - it won't run without that - or shorting the holes somehow I'm pretty sure that you also have to install the 15 uH shunt or short the holes. Otherwise you are not getting power to the AVCC pin and several of your I/O pins ...

Re: voltage regulator - can i use this one?
Not very easily, the pinout is different. The RBBB is set up for a package with the GND pin on the middle pin and this one has Vout on the middle pin.

No - I was serious. A bad output side capacitor (too much 'Equivalent Series Resistance') is a related possibility.

Re: RBBB issue with I2C
I'd say it was spurious oscillations from the voltage regulator.

Re: RBBB issue with I2C
While we are grasping at straws.... Maybe there's some issue with the power supply that affects the boards differently. Try powering your slave via a wall wart, 9v battery, or from the Arduino and see if there's any difference.

Re: The reset button
It causes the processor to run it's code from the beginning, much like it does when you first apply power. This is important when you are troubleshooting code and less important in a finished product. So what is the physical reset button actually for on the Arduino boards?

Re: I hope I've just done something stupid
Try increasing the delay to 1000 and I think everything will look OK. Right now your LED is switching every 100 mS (1/10 sec) so to your eye it always appears 'on'. If you compare what you see to an LED that is actually on all the time yours will actually appear dimmer.

Have you swapped the chip from the board that works with the chip from one of the boards that does not work?

Re: Fixed baud rate?
I have a piece of hardware that needs a 9600bps serial connection; I'm trying to get a BBB to receive data from it and send a modified form of that data to my computer. You are talking about two different serial connections here, one at 9600 baud to your hardware and a second at the same or a diffe...

Re: using crystal instead of resonator on RBBB
You need a capacitor from each end of the crystal to ground. Paul has added pads for surface mount capacitors on the bottom of the BBB boards after Rev C or so, but the RBBB doesn't have much space so I doubt he has added them to the boards since I got mine. If you have to order parts anyway, and yo...

Re: TMP421 temperature sensor
It looks like you are not familiar with the pin layout on the Arduino board. In the photo mentioned in my previous post the TMP421 board is plugged into Arduino pins 2,3,4,5 with pin 5 being the one nearest to the 'corner' of the Arduino pc board. Now if you look at the "Arduino Pin Mapping' paragra...

Re: TMP421 temperature sensor
Maybe this will help: Go to http://shop.moderndevice.com/products/tmp421-temperature-sensor and click on the lower right photograph at the bottom of the page. This uses the V+,SCL, SDA and GND pins so I assume that the software provides for the V+ and GND at the appropriate pins. It looks like the o...

Re: 3x7 header n00b questions
First, any suggestions on soldering the 3x7 header? I'm concerned about reaching the middle row of pins. Do I try to get the solder to slide down the pins? Here's what I would do: (1) Insert the header and solder two diagonally opposite pins. Make sure the header is where you want it (usually flush...

Re: Uploading to AVR with USB-BUB
But I don't know what fuses need to be set so I'm not sure what to look for. I was afraid you were going to say that. I'm not sure either - but you can use Studio 4 and your AVRISP to find out your current fuse configuration and then do some research to find out if it is correct. Without the correc...

When you uploaded the bootloader via the ICSP header did you deal with the appropriate fuse(s) as well?Any ideas on what I could try to get this working?

Re: 400x diode?
It's any diode in the 1N4000 series. IE: 1N4001, 1N4002, 1N4003, 1N4004, etc. The only difference between these diodes is their reverse voltage rating. The lower numbers have a lower rating. You would expect the lower rated 1N4002 to be less expensive than the higher rated 1N4004, but that is freque...

Wade: whatever does that mean? It means that there is a serial communications problem between your RBBB and your computer. How can I change it back to the nice BLANK chip with Arduino bootloader? Re: how can I disable auto reset on rbbb
Replace the capacitor with two machined header pins. When you need the capacitor you can insert it into the header pins.er, yeah, ok, I haven't tried a new upload, I'm assuming it's going to be the manual reset button method. failing that, I might resolder C4 with an inline switch.

Take a look through the posts in the 'Connecting to BBB, RBBB' section of the forum, you may get some ideas there. If you don't find a solution there then post some information about your operating system, etc. so Paul can come up with some specific suggestions.
