When using AVRdude do you know how the 328 is defined, or should i say which chip is it defined as?

I've been trying to get arduino working on my vaio laptop with Windows ME.

Ver 17 didn't work. so i have loaded ver 9 after some forum searching. But it still seems to be unusable. A lot of jumpyness, a lot of extra unexplained sketches started.
